FIFA's World Cup Halftime Show Puts American-Style Spectacle on the World Stage

WIRED

FIFA's World Cup Halftime Show Puts American-Style Spectacle on the World Stage Organizers want the show to be the most-viewed halftime show in history. Having Shakira, Justin Bieber, Coldplay, and BTS will surely help--but do soccer fans want it? It was all Chris Martin's idea. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Coldplay frontman called Hugh Evans, the CEO of Global Citizen, for whom he curates the Global Citizen Festival, with something new to pitch. "Wouldn't it be incredible," Evans recalls Martin saying, "if we could do the first-ever halftime show for the World Cup?"

How Qatar Became FIFA's Technology Test Lab

WIRED

Qatar has become the place where FIFA experiments with the next generation of football technology. The results are already visible across this year's World Cup. To casual soccer viewers, the game may look like it always has--same green field, 22 players, a referee, and the familiar rhythm of play unfolding over 90 minutes. The changes are only visible if you look beneath the familiar surface. What appears to be a traditional match is now supported by layers of tracking systems, automated analysis, and real-time data that run quietly in the background.

Locked Out of the World Cup: A Year Marked by Barriers, Borders, and Broken Access

WIRED

The 2026 World Cup promises a global celebration. Many Arab fans may find themselves excluded. For the first time in World Cup history, eight Arab nations have qualified for this year's tournament, including Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, and Jordan--double the number of teams that qualified for Qatar in 2022. Yet, the tournament is taking place at an unprecedented moment of heightened geopolitical tension. The US-Israel war with Iran, which began in February of this year, has caused ripple effects across Gulf states and neighboring countries in the Levant, including Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan, reshaping the security around travel and mobility for fans and players hailing from the region. The US State Department has fully suspended visa issuance for nationals from countries with teams that qualified, including Iran and Haiti--despite it being the first time Haiti has qualified for a World Cup since 1974.

Integrating Local and Global Entropy for Uncertainty Quantification in LLMs

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Existing methods rely predominantly on token-level signals, leaving the geometric structure of intermediate hidden states underused. In this paper, we take the geometric complexity of hidden-state matrices as a measure of the global uncertainty of LLMs, while treating token-level uncertainty estimation as a local metric. We show that hidden-state geometric entropy (global uncertainty) and token-level entropy (local uncertainty) are statistically near-orthogonal, capturing distinct failure regimes for reliability prediction. In particular, global geometry recovers the confident-but-wrong failure mode that local signals systematically miss. Building on this, we propose Global-Local Uncertainty (GLU), an unsupervised, single-pass score that fuses the two signals via a multiplicative gate. Across three model families and six benchmarks, GLU matches or outperforms all unsupervised baselines while requiring only a single forward pass and remaining length-normalized and architecture-agnostic. Code is available on https://github.com/qcri/GLU.git.
